“What is appalling is not what you ask for.
What is appalling is what you settle for.”
--Alan Cohen, author of Handle With Prayer…
Harnessing the Power to Make Your Dreams Come True
****
To the dismay of my realtor, I have taken my house off the market. Instead, I’m committed to living in my home at least two more years until my daughter graduates high school.
The decision was not prompted solely by challenging market conditions, although I do believe when choices are right for us there is a certain flow and ease to them. Rather, it was “knowing” the value of something, and not settling for less. The value of my property goes far beyond its physical structure.
Equally, if not more important, is the lifestyle my home provides that enables me to do the writing and coaching work I love onsite in my backyard studio and be there for my children. The tranquility of five acres of open meadow land fuels my soul and nurtures those who heal here as well.
Taking care of my property solo can feel burdensome at times, but in searching this past year to downsize to another community, I came to this realization: The home I was looking for, within a caring community and offering engagement with life, wasn’t “out there” somewhere. It was within me. I created it these past five years. My circle of friends has expanded and deepened. My income has been supplemented by a part-time position where I work in a team. My ability to ask for help and receive support from others has improved as well.
Reclaiming my home here almost immediately opened new doors, validating my decision. Additional opportunities for fun, lucrative projects and high quality people who are in sync with my values and love of nature are increasingly appearing in my life.
On an emotional level, being “off the market” has many benefits, too. I personally have been “out there” these past few years experimenting with life as an entrepreneur and as a newly single person in midlife.
Now, I find myself retreating inward, resting and regrouping. A wise client who also has been a friend urged me earlier this year to “let go of the steering wheel.” After doing all the “practical” things necessary to effect positive change, I am resting my will.
Or, as Alan Cohen says in the above referenced book, “Quit trying to run the show and let Spirit help you. If your ego really knew what to do, you would not be needing the help you are calling for. Instead, base your life in Spirit, and a greater hand than that of the small self will take care of the details. When you trust Spirit to handle what you cannot, miracles happen.”
The Signals
When I asked Spirit repeatedly these past few months during long solo walks to guide me to my next home, these were the signs I received before I “knew” it was time to stay put:
- My “house for sale” signs kept getting knocked down daily.
- A person who tried to buy my house once before continued to reach out to me, but we were never able to connect.
- A friend, who was indeed “ready” to move, sold her house the day she put it on the market. It was not difficult for her, although two years earlier when she was not ready she couldn’t sell her property.
- People kept asking why I would settle for a smaller property only twenty minutes away when I could easily drive to that other community, since many people from surrounding towns participate in activities there.
- Additional resources kept appearing at moments when I thought it was too expensive to stay.
- Some wise people who listened to me talk about my decision said my heart was not fully committed to the new location, and that the pros for staying outweighed the cons.
- My children are grounded and happy, and while I believe they would take that inner security with them, there is a lot to be said for creating as much calm as possible for teenagers who face new daily challenges as they search for and experiment with their identities as young adults.
- My soul, which has been integrating and learning much, is enjoying resting and play. Fun is high on my agenda these days. Moving feels like too much work. I’m relishing being calm and centered.
With peace,

Dancing with Life |
Interesting that I should have selected the topic of “Dancing with Life” a month ago, and in the past week many synchronicities have come forth that exemplify the concept.
I, like many of my spiritually connected friends, are seeing evidence of our thoughts and intentions manifesting almost immediately and with great ease. Lately, I’ve been finding when I have a hunch about something, that the very thing I “knew” to be true would appear. For example, I thought there was a contact with whom a friend of mine might benefit from consulting. The very next morning that contact, who I hadn’t heard from in weeks, sent me an email. Then, quite effortlessly, I was able to connect both parties for mutually beneficial opportunities.
And, in the process of connecting them, I got very clear about some of my own goals. These two people separately validated my work and innate gifts, enabling me to expand the way I package my practice.
The evening before, an acquaintance I hadn’t seen in two years, at the last minute attended an event with another coach friend and me. During the ride there, I learned she knew a person who I recently met, and validated some of my own insights about this individual.
When we become clear about our desires--and please be patient with yourselves as you sort through confusion and pace your discoveries—life becomes a dance. You put out a request, let it go, and see what appears.
Evaluating what comes forth requires some discernment, in that you don’t necessarily take the first option. Instead, you pause, and listen for signals which often come in the form of serendipitous events, or in noticing how you feel in your body in the presence of the new possibility. The pit in the stomach, for example, can tell you that you feel less powerful in that situation and to move on to something more fulfilling, while the calmness of looking into someone’s trusting eyes can assure you that the souls are meeting with equal respect and goodness.
The pause is the place where we can let Spirit, Higher Power, God or whatever you believe in that is larger than yourself and ego to do its work. By suspending our own will in these in-between moments, we can allow in greater possibilities that may not be packaged how we envisioned—sort of how music is often created in the space between the notes, too.
Dancing with life is also a knowing that the Universe is supporting you, that all you need will be provided, that others can bring you delightful surprises and opportunities, and that ease and abundance are part of our journeys, too.

BELIEF TIP OF THE MONTH: |
Find two outcomes that you desire, and choose to state them, then let them go. Send your requests out to the world, and simply observe what comes forth in the next week or so. Track evidence of your requests manifesting.
For example, if you desire a new job, and are very clear about what you want it to be, ask for it. Then notice when something appears in your life that resembles that job opportunity. Do you want to be a team player? Where in life now are you part of a team or seeing teams? Jot it down. The act of writing helps rewire the brain for the new outcome. Then challenge any belief that does not support that desired outcome.
Here are some beliefs that may help you manifest new outcomes.
- I allow myself to get clear about my desires (the new job, new relationship, etc.).
- I allow myself to receive my desires.
- I allow myself to stay open to how that desire is delivered.
- I allow myself to stay open to how that desire is packaged.
- I allow myself to work with Spirit in creating that outcome.
